Hey Troy,

We met at NCTE 2007 after a blogging session I did. I have been following your work, and this blog since.

At the risk of hijacking this post I wanted to let you and your readers know about the New Literacies Teacher Leader Institute this summer at the Friday Institute for Educational Innovation of North Carolina State University.

The Internet and other Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have redefined learning and literacy in the 21st century. How should schools and teachers respond? The New Literacies Teacher Leader Institute prepares educators for teaching in powerful ways with these new digital tools. The Institute will include inquiry projects, workshops, panel discussions, design studios, invited speakers, and just-in-time learning. Working collaboratively to develop creative and innovative instructional solutions for their classrooms, participants will spend an intensely rewarding week with other educators, just as passionate about transforming teaching and learning for the 21st century

"but because I am beginning to really wonder, deeply, about the work that we do as educators and why the changes we seem to clamor for are not happening."

I had that sick feeling yesterday two of us facilitated a workshop and conversation on Gaming in Education. The job of making change at our end is overwhelming.

When my third grader sat down to do her Tuesday's spelling homework, she was mad and aggrevated that she had to write a sentence with each word and she complained that her teacher would never read her sentences.

Educon was a great experience and I see pockets of success in this country, but the status quo is difficult.

I listened to a principal tell his staff if the varied from their lesson plan make sure they make a note about it in their lesson plan book so their work and class time will be documented. At the conclusion of the workshop today (I repeated the workshop from yesterday with another faculty), I told them about the two scientist confirmed that is was the relationship they had with a teacher that made them who they are today. I told them one day I dream of a day we can teach kids again instead of standards. This group of teachers applauded. The principal had other important things to do instead of participate in a pd he had arranged for his teachers.

Thanks for pushing my thinking. I am wcgaskins on twitter.
