I'm intrigued by the idea of utilizing Pinterest as a classroom and teaching tool. As our students become more immersed in technology on a daily basis, the importance of teaching students to use technology responsibly becomes more essential. I am curious about the legal ramifications of utilizing Pinterest in the classroom. I recently came across an article which questions the legal responsibilities a person undertakes when creating a Pinterest board. It brings up some interesting questions about copyright infringement through "pinning" and "repinning" as well as delves into the legalese in the Pinterest usage agreement.

As educators, we often utilize a variety of sources in our classroom under the protection of permission for educational use. If this educational use is on the Internet, does that protection change because of the capacity for non-students to access the information? Does this make the teacher vulnerable to copyright infringement lawsuits that might not traditionally apply? It will be interesting to see the developments in this area.

Hi Mr. Hicks,

I'm a middle school media teacher at a public school in Maryland. I came across this post a month ago from Kevin Hodgson's post about mentor texts. It was right at the start of a documentary project my students are working on now. Long story short, I shared this video with a group of five 8th grade girls as we were talking about possible topics for our documentaries. They were very interested in the video and pretty surprised at the what they learned from watching it. The video inspired them to do a documentary about gender stereotypes. They are looking into how toys are marketed to girls, and the stereotypes that emerge in that marketing.

We contacted Anita Sarkeesian and the students were able to interview her via Skype for their documentary.

These girls have since spent the last month researching the topic, conducting two Skype interviews, and are now in full production mode. This all started because I happened upon your post and shared this video in class. I just wanted to drop you a line and say thanks!

I'm interested in your observation about lack of color, and why that choice was made and what it means. I hadn't thought about it much. I suppose the simplicity of the colors buffers up against the complexity of thought behind the video. When we think of composition, though, these kinds of decisions come into play more than we imagine.
And as to the panning effect, I think it really gives a more global view of the concept, allowing the viewer/reader to take in the whole, instead of just the focused parts. How would you accomplish that with traditional writing?

That act of parody requires a certain level of critical thinking -- I am not sure my students could pull it off. But I love how digital tools open the door for those possibilities in a way that traditional print media may not. If the bag story had been a short story, it would not have been nearly as powerful a experience. The video, and narration and music, tap into an emotional response in interesting ways.

"Deconstructing through constructing" -- that's a fascinating idea, sort of like meta-video-creation, right? Hmmm.
I wonder why it is that time-lapse videos are so powerful (and they are) -- is it the slowing down of time that videos offer, or something else? Just thinking ....

This stuck with me: "There are times when we ask our students to imitate published authors, and to do so quite intentionally. We recognize this not as an act of plagiarism, but as a way for them to study and learn technique."
And I tried to develop that somewhat myself this morning around the act of emulation (not so much the plagiarism angle, though). I find that mentor texts both pave a path and hem them in, and how to find that in-between balance of inspiration is difficult.

I continue to be impressed by how closely you are observing the videos in your series, Troy. This provides not only visibility to the supposed intent of the creator, but also, provides a frame for how one might consider diving into this kind of digital composition.
Kevin
PS -- I kept having trouble logging into your site but figured out how to reset my password. That's why I haven't commented until now.
